The end of February can be a little stark and bleak in CT. and I for one have been wishing I were headed for warmer climates. It seems like every weather forecast calls for snow or some other cold and icy form of precipitation. When Lee, our grower popped his head in the office today and told me the doors were all open on the houses to vent them, I jumped for joy! Yippee!
The first sign of spring up here is the day we open the doors! So camera in hand I went on a hunt for color, life, a sign that any day I would be released from the confines of the office and the glow of the computer screen!
First stop was the propagation house, where all our baby plants are kept warm and safe. It's always nice place to visit on a chilly day, warm and humid with the smell of soil and new growth. The little baby Pieris 'Dorothy Wycoff'
are sporting little pink buds, swelling in the warmth of the greenhouse. The cheerful pink of one lone PJM cutting blooming in the tray made my day!
As I moved on to the colder realms, there wasn't as much going on, some swelling buds on the forsythia, but still a long way from flowering. My most exciting find was the Hamamelis vernalis, in full flower! A welcome sight! Spring will come! Proof that even in the dead of winter, there is still plenty of growing life!
